I used the high-strength low-alloy steel hollow tubes for most of the bridge because it is strong but cheap. Where the bridge would fail or need more support i used high-strength low-alloy solid bars because they are stronger than the hollow bars. I also made the supports wider/bigger because it helped the bridge to support more weight.
I didn't do any research on bridge designs so I don't have references
Conclusion
1. The type and direction affects the material used because depending on how strong the stress is there might be a need for a stronger material or greater cross-sectional area to withstand the stress.
2. The forces can act upon each other according to the position of the load to strengthen the bridge.
