Bar & Grille Design Charrette
Problem
The city of Newark is considering purchasing a vacant warehouse in a blighted section of town. The area was once a busy manufacturing district along a riverfront near the downtown area. The city would like to convert the warehouse to a facility that provides a community service. The goal is to encourage redevelopment of the area.

Stakeholders
- Landscape Architect- Designs the parking lot and plans where different parts of the landscaping will go. Also designed the roof because of the foliage that was put up there.
- Building Inspector / Code Inspector / Construction Inspector - Ensures safety of the building as well as inspecting for code violations and ensuring that they are corrected
- Civil Engineer - Design the framework of the building and ensures that everything in the architects plan is able to be done and is safe to do.
- Contractor - Oversees the construction done on the building
- Heath and Safety Engineer - Oversees the safety of construction workers, and the product used. Also enforces safety regulations.
- Interior Design - Arranges the furniture in the completed building.
- Architect - Designs and modifies the building to comply with what the customer wants.
- Cost Estimator - Collects and analyzes the data to estimate the cost of building.
Meeting Record
During the meetings we spent the majority of our time arguing about what we were going to turn the warehouse into and then once we decided on a bar and grille we constantly argued about the layout. We eventually decided to all create our own designs and then we combined our favorite elements of each into our final design. We also had to discuss the role that each of use played in this process so we spent one of the days doing that.

Benefits
- Draws tourism into Newark and the surrounding area
- Gives people a closer option than going to Salisbury to eat dinner at a restaurant
Unanswered Questions
- Is the exposed fire pit on the roof allowed to be there? We can have the code inspector tell us so that it can be removed if needed
- There is an emergency exit from the roof but there aren't any on the first floor, is that a problem? Again, we can have the code inspector tell us so that is can be modified.
- Is the rooftop seating against codes if there isn't a tall enough wall surrounding the edge of the roof? Ask the code inspector and have it modified if necessary.
- Are spiral staris allowed because not everyone is able to go up them? Ask the code inspector and adjust accordingly
Conclusion Questions
1. So that the project can continue in a way that is safe and up to code, all while making the client happy.
2. Bowling, trampoline park, casino, skate park and waterpark were all ideas that we originally had but after a vote were decided unanimously to not be done. We realized that the area surrounding Newark already had all of these things and that it would be pointless to build a new one. Also some were not able to be done because of the pre-existing warehouse that was our structure.
3. It allows everyone who is involved with building the structure to have their input considered the first time around so that it is insured that the project is feasible before time and money were poured into a project that is unable to be done. Traditionally, the realization that this project couldn't actually occur would come in the middle or at the end of it, not at the beginning.
4. A draw back of this plan is that the bar and grille is in Newark where there isn't much business as it is, and although this bar and grille may help to bring business in, it is likely that people would opt for going to a bar and grille in Ocean City instead, where the surrounding area is more directed at people and tourism. As with most small restaurants in small towns, it is only the town that keeps the business alive, so the location is not optimal.
